Russell (Pete) Whistler passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2015 at the age of 91, in Reid Hospital, with his son by his side.
Pete was born in Union City, Indiana on September 10, 1923 to William and Ethlinda Whistler.  He remained in Union City his entire life.  For the past several years he has resided in the Union City Retirement Village, surrounded by a loving a caring staff.
After High School, Pete joined the United States Army where he served with honor as a Tank Commander in Germany and France.  He was a member of the 749th Tank Battalion.  The 749th had the distinction of serving for 196 days of continuous combat.  He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart.  He was also awarded the Bronze Star.
Following the war Pete worked at Sheller Globe and Westinghouse, ultimately retiring from Sheller Globe.  He was a past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club.  He served on the Union City, Ohio City Council and was always actively involved in the community.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Margaret (Peggy) Houghtlin Whistler; his youngest son, John Michael and his sister; Marcella Holden.  He is survived by his son, Russell Jr. (Sharon); daughter-in-law, Trevalee; grandchildren; Rev. Mick Whistler (Renee), Stephanie Bean (John), and Christopher Whistler (Laura).  He is also survived by 5 great grandchildren, and 3 sisters, Esther Gard, Bethena Mathews and Patricia Stonerock.
Graveside services will be conducted Friday June 5, 2015, 11:00 a.m. in the Union City Cemetery with Military Burial Rites conducted by the Randolph County Honor Guard.  Memorial donations may be made to the Evangelical United Methodist Church, 117 N.
