Rheta (Bruss) Johnson, a life-long resident of Union City, IN entered into Heavenâs gates on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Ball Hospital at the age of 83.
Rheta was born February 11, 1934 to Everett and Mildred (Ludy) Bruss. She had three older brothers Robert of Omaha, NE and Roger of Union City, IN who preceded her in death and Richard who resides in Englewood, Ohio.
Rheta worked for many years at Sheller Globe in Union City. After her retirement she fulfilled her lifelong dream of opening a fabric store, The Sewing Basket, in Union City. She did alterations and rented tuxedos as well. After closing her store, she worked in the cafeteria at Mississinawa Valley up into her late 70âs and still continued to sew from her home. She helped dress many bridal parties and prom goers over the years. In recent years, she took up quilting, even though she often commented how silly it was to take a piece of fabric, cut it into little pieces, then sew it back together.
Rheta enjoyed travelling, visiting Alaska, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, The Grand Canyon and Vermont, to name a few destinations, but her favorite place to visit was the white sands of Siesta Key, where many vacations were spent and many memories were made with her children and grandchildren. Rheta also enjoyed having family gatherings in her home, a good glass of wine, a frozen margarita, Breyers vanilla bean ice cream, Oreo cookies, a good book, cruises around town on her usual route, swimming in her pool and sitting on her porch, but most of all she enjoyed being a grandma and memaw.
Rheta is survived by her daughter Gianna (husband Ron) Pollitt, and her grand children Kyle, Jessica and Michael (wife Madison) and great grandchildren Ava Marie and Lane Michael Pollitt, her son Greg (wife Becky) Harshman and her grand children Jay and Abby and great grandson Mason as well as her son in law Guy Leverenz and her grand daughter Chelsi. She was preceded in death by her daughter Kathy (Harshman) Leverenz.
Rheta is also survived by three close nieces Susan, Rachel and Ruth, her dear friend Rosie Vickery, her church family at Our Saviour Lutheran Church and the many people she has sewn for over the years. Rheta is an example of a life well lived and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation is 4-7 P.M. Wednesday April 5th, 2017 at the Reichard Funeral Home Inc., 400 W. Deerfield Rd., Union City. Services are 10:30 A.M. Thursday April 6th, 2017 also at the Funeral Home with the Rev. Monte Poling officiating. Burial will follow in the Lisbon Cemetery.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Kathy Harshman Leverenz Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Randolph County Community Foundation, with envelopes available at the funeral home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.reichardfh.com.
