Phyllis E. Eley, 93, of Union City, Indiana died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, March 1, 2017. She was born in Hillgrove, Ohio on October 16, 1923 to the late Ray and Alice (Arnold) Wagner.
Phyllis attended the one-room school house in Hillgrove, Ohio for her first eight grades of school. She was a graduate of Jackson High School, Union City, Ohio and a graduate of Miami Valley School of Nursing in Dayton, Ohio. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Bethany Hospital in Chicago for two years and at Union City Memorial Hospital for 30 years, as well as did private duty nursing. She married Wilmer Eley on October 10, 1948. She was a long-time member of the Church of the Brethren.
Phyllis enjoyed baking, sewing, tatting, needlework, gardening, china painting, exhibiting her handiwork at the Indiana State Fair, participating in the Union City Farmerâs Market, and time with her family.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her sisters Patricia Bishop and Jean Hull; son Theodore Eley; and daughter-in-law Pam Eley.
Phyllis is survived by her husband of 68 years, Wilmer Eley; children Scott (Bev) Eley of Decatur, IN, David Eley of Winchester, IN, Diane Eley of Indianapolis, IN and Mark Eley of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren Heather (Jason) Coffey, Elijah (Elizabeth) Eley, Joshua (Amanda) Eley, Benjamin Eley, Jessica (Jason) Tinsman, Jacob (Regan) Eley, Samuel Eley, Josiah Eley, Rebekah Eley, Daniel Eley, Esther Eley, Rachel Eley, Jennifer Eley, Timothy Eley, Sharon Eley; two step grandchildren Katrina and Nathan Brown; 8 great-grandchildren; sister Barbara Glick of Duluth, MN, and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 4 at the Reichard Funeral Home, Inc., Union City, Indiana. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 3 at the funeral home and for one hour prior to services on Saturday. Burial will be in the Brick Memorial Park Cemetery, Union City, Indiana. Pastor Jim Leonard will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.
