Mary Ruth Stoner died on October 29, 2020 surrounded by family after a brief illness. She was born March 14, 1928 to Arlie and Zelpha (Greaf) Sheffer. She grew up in Salamonia, Indiana and graduated from Madison Township High School. She lived most of her adult life in Union City, Indiana, and worked at the Westinghouse Small Motors plant located there. Mary Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of seventy years, Dale F. Stoner, who died in 2018.
Mary Ruth was involved in numerous church groups over the years at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She was also involved in the ADO Sorority which gave her great pleasure and provided numerous leadership roles. For many years, she and Dale worked Mondays at the local Help Center, and she was an advocate for helping others.
Mary Ruth was a tireless supporter of her childrenâs music, school and athletic activities and, in later years, those of her five grandchildren. She made it a point to be at all their high school and college graduations. Mary Ruth had an amazing collection of depression ware and Madame Alexander dolls, enjoyed sewing, and made each grandchild a Swedish weaving blanket.
In retirement, she and Dale traveled to all fifty states, went through the Panama Canal, viewed The Oberammergau Passion Play, and loved winters in Sebring, Florida with their many new friends. A person of deep faith, she read her Bible daily and later found a wonderful church family at Allisonville Christian Church in Indianapolis.
She is survived by Jean (David) Fox of Roslindale, MA; Jody Adelsperger of Hanover, PA; and Mark (Becky) Stoner of Indianapolis; five grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and her brother Dale Sheffer of Oakland, CA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Allisonville Christian Church, 7701 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, Indiana 46250. An outdoor memorial service with social distancing and masks will be held on Monday, November 2nd at 11 am at Allisonville Christian.
