Donald Lahmar Stocksdale of Union City, Indiana died March 1, 2017 at 6:06 AM at Reid Hospital from a severe lung infection.
Don was born January 16, 1935 to Glen and Ethel Barnhart Stocksdale and raised on a farm near Union City, Ohio. He was graduated from Jackson High School in 1953, received a Bachelorâs degree from Manchester College in 1957 and a Masterâs degree from Ohio State University in 1962.
Don taught Science and Spanish in High Schools and Middle Schools in Union City, Indiana, Ansonia, Ohio and Russiaville, Indiana. He also worked as a chemist at BASF in Greenville, Ohio. He is probably most remembered for growing and selling (and often giving away) produce on his small farm in Union City, Indiana where his family has lived since 1971.
Don was also an accomplished watercolor artist, regularly producing and displaying award winning artwork at shows in Randolph and Darke County.
Don was also passionate about global missions. He and his wife Pat traveled to Africa seven times to assist with building and mission projects. He was an active member and served many years as deacon of Pleasant Hill Church in Union City.
Don is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Kirkendall Stocksdale, to whom he has been married since 1960, and his four children (and their spouses), Jon (Susan) Stocksdale, Diane (Mark) Vanderkooi, Mark (Carol) Stocksdale, Paul (Cynthia) Stocksdale, 7 grandchildren (Joel, Kyle, Caroline, Gabriella, Benjamin, Griffen, and Graham Stocksdale), and 2 brothers, Eugene Stocksdale and Jesse Stocksdale.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his sister Eleanor Wilson, and his brother Vaughn Stocksdale.
Visitation will be from 9 am to 11 am at Pleasant Hill Church, 9945 N 800 E, Union City, Indiana on Saturday, March 4th. Memorial Service will follow. Interment will happen at a later time.
